The City of Cortez is applying for the community business preservation program on behalf of Cortez's local businesses. The program is designed to provide training, consultation support, and $10,000 to $50,000 in grants per business to help with one-time expenses such as infrastructure improvements, technology, building code upgrades, energy efficiency, hired contract work, and more. The City of Cortez is encouraging local businesses to show interest in this funding opportunity by completing applications by January 3rd. Five to seven communities in Colorado will be chosen and only two to six businesses per community. Cortez businesses must meet certain criteria to apply and will be prioritized if they sell primarily locally sourced goods, cater to the outdoor recreation, tourism, and/or creative industries, contribute to the community's cultural, social, or historical significance and/or face destabilizing pressures that threaten the cultural legacy of the community. This program is administered by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Visit the City of Cortez website for more information. Absolute Bakery and Cafe and Mancos is changing ownership starting January 1st. Owners David and Karen Blaine purchased the Absolute Bakery and Cafe in 2007, operating it alongside their children and friends. After 16 years, they decided it was time to move on. The Blain's were delighted to sell the bakery in February of 2023 to restaurateurs with over 50 years of combined restaurant experience. The new owners are from Key West Florida, and several years ago purchased a house in Mancos. They will officially be taking over in January, and will be closing the bakery for an estimated two months for repairs and renovations. The Blains will be closing up the Absolute Bakery and Cafe for the last time on December 31st after breakfast, and would like to thank all of their customers and staff for their support. Beginner and intermediate classes taught by Bill Inverso will be held on Monday evenings running January 8th through February 12th.
