The City of Cortez seeks your comments on its proposed land use code. The opening reception for Leigh Waggoner's mosaic exhibit will be February 7th at St. Barnabas of the Valley Episcopal Church. Mancos Friends of the Library's Annual Valentine's Day Bake Sale is back for another year on February 14th. The City of Cortez recently expressed confidence in its ability to respond to wildfires because of surrounding geological features and emergency management plans in Montezuma County. You're watching the "Local News Roundup," brought to you by Big O Tires and Hospice of Montezuma. I'm Connor Shreve. The public draft of the Cortez land use code is open for public review prior to the Planning and Zoning Commission hearing on Tuesday, February 18th. The code includes several regulatory changes that address parking, lighting, natural resource protections, and lot size requirements. The code also includes a new historic preservation section. It updates and clarifies existing definitions, simplifies the development review process, addresses affordable housing goals, and reflects other community goals. Cortez residents may provide comments online on the city of Cortez website or in person at the Cortez City Hall. Residents also are encouraged to attend public meetings on February 18th, February 25th, and March 1st for a review of the proposed code. The opening reception for Leigh Waggoner's Terra Forma Mosaics is 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, February 7th at St. Barnabas of the Valley Episcopal Church. Wagoner uses glass, recycled objects, marble, limestone, and other natural materials to create a unique blend of light, shadow, depth, and negative space. See Waggoner's art on display at the church from eight to noon Monday through Thursday through April 7th. Mancos Friends of the Library's Annual Valentine's Day Bake Sale will be from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Friday, February 14th at the Mancos Public Library. The Valentine's Day Bake Sale is the volunteer group's longstanding fundraiser and membership drive. Last year, the group sold more than $500 in baked goods and generated $150 in membership dues. Community members are welcome to join Manco Friends of the Library meetings at 4:00 PM on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is February 4th at the library. The City of Cortez Director of Public Works recently expressed confidence in the city and Montezuma County's wildfire mitigation plans. In a letter written in response to the Los Angeles County wildfires, Public Works Director Brian Peckins wrote that the Cortez area has a lower population density, sparse vegetation, and more water sources that make it less vulnerable to wildfire compared to LA County. In addition, the area's water sources include three two million gallon storage tanks, a 20 million gallon raw water storage reservoir, canals, and more than 500 fire hydrants. Life safety is a priority in the Montezuma County wildfire protection plan and the city's wildfire mitigation plan. For tips on how you could prevent fires and prepare for emergencies, visit the Cortez Fire Protection District website. Learn more about these and other stories online at montezumalocal.news. Growing Community, Culture, and Climate-Adapted Crops

Pueblo Seed & Food Co. is a family-run organic farm and seed enterprise rooted in deep stewardship of land, seed, and community. Established in 1996 and now operating on irrigated acreage near Cortez, Colorado, the company grows a wide diversity of certified organic crops—open-pollinated seeds, chile peppers, varietal garlic, vegetables, legumes, and heritage grains—selling them as seeds, fresh produce, and handcrafted foods through their Seed & Bakehouse retail space. Their mission centers on renewing and strengthening community resilience by stewarding healthy seeds and food, guided by regenerative, biodynamic, and conservation farming traditions that honor both plant genetics and human stories. As winter approaches, Farm Direct Seed & Food Co. invites its community to celebrate the Winter Solstice Fundraiser on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at their downtown Cortez Bakehouse. This festive gathering not only marks the seasonal turning point with music, hands-on milling and baking, and holiday shopping, but also serves as a kickoff to their exciting new initiative—the Pueblo Seed & Grain Hub, developed in partnership with the Onward! Foundation to expand regional capacity for drought-tolerant grain and legume production. Join in the spirit of the season with whole grain cookies, community, and support for food and seed security in the Southwest. By Paige Sparks.
