Montezuma voters are getting a ballot redo due to a layout error. The Cortez Police Department is inviting you to a presentation on Thursday, November 7th. The City of Cortez has announced a new hire, and Montezuma County has a safety reminder for all residents and commuters. You're watching the "Local News Roundup," brought to you by Big O Tires and Hospice of Montezuma. I'm Connor Shreve. New ballots are being sent to Montezuma County voters who live in RE1 School District, Precinct D, due to a layout error. The ballots that were originally sent did not include a Montezuma Cortez School district RE1 ballot issue 4B, regarding increasing taxes to raise base salaries for teachers. Residents are asked to fill out a corrected ballot and return it by election day, Tuesday, November 5th. Original ballots will only be counted if they do not receive a new one by 7:00 p.m. on election day. Only one ballot will be counted per voter. If you have questions, please contact the Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder's Office. The Cortez Police Department invites you to the Shield 616 Angel Armor Vest presentation on Thursday, November 7th. Last May, officers Jason Jachino and Tyler Smith participated in a 273 mile bike ride called the Tour de Shield 616. Officers rode to raise money for rifle-rated Angel Armor vests in honor of Sergeant Michael Moran, who was killed in the line of duty last November. They raised over $12,000 and provided 125 vests to law enforcement across Colorado. The event will take place at Cortez City Hall, with the presentation beginning promptly at 6:00 p.m. Space is limited, so please RSVP. The City of Cortez announced Elizabeth Edson as the new Director of the Cortez Public Library. Edson has a master's degree in library and information science, and over 15 years of library experience. Including recently serving as branch manager for the Kansas City Public Library. Edson will be moving to Cortez, with plans to start work on December 16th. Montezuma County's Office of Emergency Management would like to remind residents to sign up for emergency alerts, especially as winter weather approaches. Alerts may include severe weather, road closures, evacuations, missing persons, and more. The system is designed to send alerts only to people within the affected areas, rather than the entire county. You can opt in to receive alerts via call, text, and/or email. To sign up, download the Everbridge app, or visit Montezuma County's website for a link. You can learn more about these and other stories online at montezumalocal.news.
