Construction begins on the highway bypass in downtown Mancos. Step back in time with stories from early Montezuma County. Get ready for wildfire season and learn to protect your home at a presentation by the Wildfire Adapted Partnership. And the City of Cortez launches a contest for artists and community members. You're watching the "Local News Roundup," brought to you by Home2Suites and the Durango Motor Company. I'm Connor Shreve. Drivers and pedestrians can expect construction in downtown Mancos from April through September when the Colorado Department of Transportation improves the U.S. Highway 160 bypass. The construction zone crosses approximately eight side streets in downtown Mancos, and parallels U.S. Highway 160 to the north. The project includes pedestrian upgrades, new sidewalks, ramps and accessibility improvements, as well as storm water, drainage, and pipe replacements. Drivers should plan for lane shifts, shoulder closures, and sidewalk detours. For project updates and road conditions, visit the CDOT website. The Montezuma Heritage Museum will present "Voices from the Past," a reader's theater performance on local history, featuring true stories from early Montezuma County residents. The script draws from interviews and writings, dating from the 1880s to the 1940s that are preserved in the museum's archives. Performances will be at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Saturday, May 3rd at the Sunflower Theater. Tickets are available online at the Sunflower Theater website. The Dolores Public Library will host a fire preparedness talk at noon on Friday, April 26th. Celeste Moore, Wildfire Adapted Partnership's Montezuma and Dolores County coordinator will share how to prepare your home and family for fire season. Topics include how to protect your home from fire and embers, how to create defensible space around your home, evacuation preparedness, and wildfire adapted partnership programs. The one-hour presentation is free. For more information, visit the Wildfire Adapted Partnership website. Cortez community members are invited to design a commemorative logo for the city of Cortez's 140th anniversary. The contest runs from April 10th to May 27th with winners announced at the city council meeting June 10th. The top three entries will earn cash prizes, and the winning logo will be used in the 2026 anniversary campaigns. The contest is open to all Cortez residents, and anyone connected to Cortez through either a school, business, or organization. Submissions are due on Tuesday, May 27th. For contest rules and design criteria, visit the City of Cortez website or contact community and economic development specialist, Helen West.
