MORE THAN A HUNDRED VETERANS, FAMILY MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS GATHERED AT CORTEZ CITY PARK ON PATRIOT'S DAY – SEPTEMBER 11TH – TO RENAME THE PARK IN HONOR OF LOCAL VETERANS. CORTEZ PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR DEAN PALMQUIST SAID THE PARK HAS SERVED AS HEADQUARTERS FOR SEVERAL MEMORIALS HONORING VETERANS FOR YEARS, AND WHEN A FORMER PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBER RECOMMENDED THE NAME CHANGE, THE CORTEZ CITY COUNCIL AGREED.
CITY PARK JUST SEEMED LIKE SUCH A GENERIC NAME, THAT IT JUST MADE SENSE WITH THESE MEMORIALS HERE TO, TO NAME THIS VETERAN'S PARK AND JUST TO RECOGNIZE, SOME PARK, TO RECOGNIZE THE VETS. RICK TORRES, DIRECTOR OF THE MONTEZUMA COUNTY VETERANS SERVICES OFFICE, SAYS THE AREA IS HOME TO MORE THAN 22 HUNDRED VETERANS WHOSE SERVICE SPANS MORE THAN 80 YEARS, FROM WORLD WAR TWO TO PRESENT-DAY.
WELL, THIS IS A BIG DEAL FOR THE VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN MONTEZUMA COUNTY. ANY TIME THAT A CITY GOVERNMENT OR ANY GOVERNMENT TAKES A MOMENT, AND THEY PAUSE TO SAY, THANK YOU, BACK TO OUR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES. I MEAN, IT'S AN AMAZING THING. TORRES SAID THE PARK EVENTUALLY WILL BECOME THE LOCATION FOR ADDITIONAL VETERANS MEMORIALS HONORING THOSE WHO SERVED AND DIED IN OTHER MILITARY CONFLICTS OVER THE YEARS. IN THE MEANTIME, THE NEXT VETERANS EVENT IN MONTEZUMA COUNTY WILL BE THE SECOND ANNUAL MONTEZUMA STAND DOWN FOR VETERANS EVENT FROM 8 A.M. TO 3 P.M.
