The Cortez Police Department Citizens Academy offers a behind the scenes look at law enforcement and is open for enrollment. This seven week program covers police procedures and equipment, hands-on exercises, and opportunities to meet local officers, dispatchers, and detectives. The Academy runs from six to 8:00 PM on Thursdays from April 3rd through May 15th at the Cortez Police Department. Admission is free, but space is limited. Parents and community members can learn and help share special education programs during the San Juan BOCES Special Education Advisory Committee online meeting at 5:15 PM on Tuesday, April 1st. The meeting provides an opportunity for parents and community members to connect and discuss special education programs. San Juan BOCES is a public organization that provides educational programs and services to students with disabilities across eight local schools and five counties. High School students can sharpen their driving skills and learn lifesaving techniques during the Alive at 25 course in Cortez. Alive at 25 is an interactive defensive driving course that promotes safe driving among young drivers. The course will be from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM on Saturday, April 5th at the Cortez Police Department. The course uses role play, interactive media, and group discussions to teach defensive driving skills and encourage driver responsibility. Students also receive a certificate upon completion.
