The Ute Mountain Casino Hotel continues its 30th anniversary celebration with a powwow, offering more than $50,000 in dance, drum, and hand game prizes. The Ute Mountain Casino Hotel will offer more than $50,000 in prizes during the 2022 Pow Wow celebration on Friday and Saturday, August 19th and 20th. Entry to the event is free. The festivities begin on Friday with a blessing of the grounds and flag raising at 7:00 a.m. at the Indian Village at the casino. The Indian market opens at 4:00 p.m. with food and arts and crafts vendors, followed by the Pow Wow grand entry at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, registration for the hand game tournament opens at 9:00 a.m. with the tournament starting at 12:30 p.m. The hand game tournament offers a total payout of $10,000. Grand entry for the Pow Wow starts at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by dance and drum competitions. A total of $41,000 in dance and drum prizes will be awarded. The City of Cortez has opened application for its annual Community Grants Program to support organizations that preserve or enrich the health, education, welfare, and fitness of the community. Applicants must be an established nonprofit that addresses a unique community need, serves a broad spectrum of the community, and avoids duplication of services. A Labor Day concert that benefits animal rescue organizations, including Denkai Animal Sanctuary in Cortez, will be on Sunday, September 4th at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds. Concert 4 Critters was created by film producer Phyllis Stewart who produces "Hope in the West", a reality TV series that features renegades and misfits who do good in their communities by saving animals from mistreatment. The show stars Floss Blackburn, founder of Denkai Animal Sanctuary. The inaugural Concert 4 Critters will feature the Little Texas band, Navajo singer-songwriter Levi Platero, and singer-songwriter Haley Reinhart. Comedian Pam Stone, who co-starred in the television series "Coach" with Craig T. Nelson, will host the event. Get your taste buds ready. The 23rd annual San Juan Brewfest that benefits United Way of Southwest Colorado returns on Friday and Saturday, August 26th and 27th at Buckley Park in Durango. New this year is a special VIP night from 5 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday with a limited 500 tickets sold. VIP ticket holders will be treated to tastings from 35 participating breweries, live music, and dinner provided by the 2nd Avenue Deli & Spirits and Cream Bean Berry. VIP tickets are $100 each. General admission tastings will be from 1 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. General admission tickets are $45. Participants must be at least 21 years old to enter the tasting area. About a third of the breweries are from Southwest Colorado according to a news release from the Business Improvement District, which organizes the event along with the United Way. Prior to the pandemic, the Brewfest generated about $50,000 for United Way of Southwest Colorado. United Way supports nonprofits in La Plata, Montezuma, Dolores, Archuleta, and San Juan Counties.
